Here the world of the living. There the one of the dead. They are parallel spaces that will confront and make two characters apparently separated by death coexist.

"The central theme of this short film is the mourning after the death of a loved one, and it is from this place that a solid premise is built to enter the universes of the world of the living and the dead. In this sense, the articulation from the central theme to the aesthetic device occurs organically, since the stylistic searches derived from the engraving techniques are totally anchored to the thematic heart of the story and the narrative.
"Aquí y allá" raises the phenomenon of mourning from a hectic, vertiginous and loving place, being narratively and stylistically coherent with the light and dark of these emotional processes.
In thematic terms, the short film poses a fundamental question to the viewer: What is really the world of the living and what is the world of the dead? And it is in this narrative game that the short film provides the possibility of reflecting on our relationship and possibility of identification with death.
This short offers us a new point of view to approach the subject of death, since it changes the traditional rules of the way of approaching the imaginary of death, allowing a deeper and more reflective approach by placing ourselves in the unusual place of a process of mourning lived by who is the icon of death par excellence: "La calaca".
Angel Linares
The characters and backgrounds were made using two engraving techniques: high relief (linoleum) and photogravure (on zinc plate).
On the one hand, those made in high relief were used to represent the world of the dead. His rough and high-contrast lines allow the viewer to distance himself from relating this aesthetic with the real world, proposing a totally imaginary and fantastic space.
On the other, those made in rotogravure, were used to represent the world of the living. Chosen for its multiplicity of detailed tonal ranges that help evoke an aesthetic closer to the real world.
