The director´s vision

"Shifting"  arose when I found my grandmother´s intimate notebooks. As I read them I began to find drawings of spaces and thoughts alike with some of my notebooks. I began to read both notebooks and it seemed that they were reaching agreements and interacting, even though they spoke of different realities.

This meeting of thoughts reflected on the similarities we have as humans, the fears in common, and the stories of violence that are repeated no matter the time or country in which they take place.

This animation was an opportunity to reconnect with my family, and with my past. And show that this reflection is the strongest and most personal experience that my grandmother and I have lived through.

The short film does not have a linear story or a narrative. The intention is to delve into the sensations and emotions that are experienced when reading the notes of two people, which are honesty, disorder, and lost ideas. The short film is created to be watched multiple times, and each time to find or understand different things. In the same way that happens when someone finds a personal notebook and leafs through it, with each reading new contents appear and even a different order to go through is revealed.

Techniques used in the animation

The animation is made with manual techniques:

Metal engraving, lithographs, charcoal on paper, ink on glass, and the stop motion technique to animate the original notebooks.

More than 1900 charcoal drawings, 500 ink drawings on glass, 40 etching gravures, and 5 lithographs were used to make the short film.

Techniques were chosen with a great deal of material and gestural charge, seeking to express the intensity of the sensations. The variety of techniques allowed us to have a very wide range of sensations and to be able to play with the change of emotions that developed between each thought or change of theme in the selection of the notebooks.
