VISION OF THE DIRECTOR ON THE SHORT

Shifting arises when I find my grandmother's intimate notebooks, with notes, writings and drawings. When reading them I began to find drawings of spaces and thoughts that reminded me of a notebook that I filled out as a teenager. I began to read both notebooks and it seemed to me that they were reaching agreements and interacting by themselves, despite talking about different realities.

This meeting of thoughts made me reflect on the similarities we have as humans, the common fears and the stories of violence that are repeated regardless of the time or country in which they take place.

This animation was an opportunity to reconnect with my family, with my past and to share it with you. Show them a set of reflections on the strongest and most personal experiences that my grandmother and I have lived through.

The short does not have a linear story, or a narrative. The intention is to delve into the sensations and emotions that are experienced when reading the notes of two people, where there is honesty, disorder and lost ideas. The short is created to be seen multiple times, and each time find or understand different things. In the same way that happens when someone finds a personal notebook and leafs through it, with each reading new content, new meanings and even a different order to go through it are revealed.

TECHNIQUES USED IN ANIMATION

The animation is made with pure manual techniques:

Metal engraving, lithographs, carbon on paper, ink on glass and the stop motion technique to animate the original notebooks.

More than 1900 charcoal drawings, 500 ink on glass drawings, 40 photogravures and 5 lithographs were made to make the short film.

Techniques with a lot of material and gestural load were chosen, seeking to express the intensity of the sensations. The variety of techniques made it possible to have a very wide range of sensations and to be able to play with the change of emotions that developed between each thought or change of subject in the selection of the notebooks.
